Ukrainian government official enlists diplomatic support for autocephaly

VATICAN RESPECTS DECISION OF UKRAINIAN PEOPLE ON CREATING UNITED LOCAL CHURCH

RISU, 26 September 2018

On 25 September 2018, within the context of the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pavel Klimkin, met with the Secretary for Relations with States of the Holy See, Paul Richard Gallagher, the official website of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports.

An exchange of opinions took place regarding the process of granting autocephaly to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The Holy See respects the decision of the Ukrainian people for the creation of a united local church.

The Ukrainian side noted that the tomos, as the first step toward a new church, is an act of profound historical justice and a forerunner of peace, unity, and harmony and of the strengthening of the constitutional principle of freedom of religious confessions and protection of the rights and liberties of the Ukrainian people. This process has already begun and a return to the status quo is impossible.

The MID declared that the support of the Holy See and the clear position regarding the granting of a tomos is an important step for strengthening inter-religious dialogue. (tr. by PDS, posted 26 September 2018)
