Facing death alone in Italy

Europe’s epicentre of the coronavirus is Italy where churches and other places of worship are closed and funerals are banned. That’s especially hard in a country where one in five people goes at mass each week. Those dying of coronavirus are disproportionately older and more observant.

The virus has also presented Italy’s doctors with the ethical nightmare of choosing who gets treatment and who misses out.

Mattia Ferraresi is a journalist with Italy’s Il Folio newspaper. He’s been writing about the suffering for The New York Times.
