Humanity in Crisis

At our May 19 event Senior Fellow Rev. David Hollenbach, S.J., engaged with key policymakers and ethicists to discuss what specific policies towards migrants and refugees should look like when they are consistent with ethical values. Hollenbach addresses these issues in Humanity in Crisis: Ethical and Religious Response to Refugees (2019), his newly released book which examines the scope of our responsibilities and considers practical solutions to the global refugee crisis.

Religion and Mental Health
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Contributors to the Berkley Forum explored ways that theology can inform approaches to mental health care in clinical and religious settings. A student research project examined the varied ways in which religious communities approach mental health care, based on interviews with faith leaders around Washington, DC.

Kaitlyn Johnson presenting
Pope Francis and the Struggle Over the Future of Catholicism
On May 26 Pope Francis biographer Christopher Lamb and historian Massimo Faggioli joined Berkley Center Director Shaun Casey and Senior Research Fellow Amy Uelmen to discuss conflict within the Vatican and its implications for the Church’s dealings in global affairs and the future of Catholicism. The conversation was moderated by Senior Fellow Paul Elie.

Berkley Forum on COVID-19
In May our blog continue to tackle the role of religion and faith actors in addressing the pandemic, covering topics like COVID-19 guidance for religious communities and leaders, how the crisis has highlighted questions about government regulation of religious bodies in Latin America, the pandemic's unique impact on women, and ways COVID-19 has exacerbated ethno-religious tensions in Sri Lanka.
