We need the Sabbath’s calm more than ever

Since the spread of Covid-19, organised religion has become more important to people of all ages. According to a poll for Tearfund, the Christian development charity, 24 per cent of adults at home have watched or listened to a religious service. Because many of these services are broadcast on the Sabbath, the growth in attendance during the pandemic prompts questions about the importance of the Fourth Commandment, whose opening phrase is: “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”

To some who have been furloughed and feel as if they have too little activity, even the idea of discussing the importance of a set day of rest may appear insensitive. The same may be true for those who feel they have to work seven days
