Rite of Burial for Victims of Covid-19

Sri Lanka Council of Religions for Peace (SLCRP)  20210214

The Sri Lanka Council of Religions for Peace (SLCRP) which is a multi-religious organization representing Buddhist, Christian, Hindu and Muslim leaders in Sri Lanka is very happy to learn that almost two days after its press-release which appealed to the government to look into the possibility of the rite of burial for victims who have succumbed to the Covid-19 pandemic, that the Hon’ble  Prime Minister had announced in parliament that permission has to be granted for the burial of the victims of Covid-19.  The magnanimity and consideration given to the ardent appeals of some sections of our citizens on cultural and religious grounds is most welcome. This decision would no doubt bring a sense of relief to all sections of our people who have been battling this devastating pandemic in Sri Lanka since February 2020.

The Sri Lanka Council of Religions for Peace whilst appreciating and being grateful about this decision, hopes that this would strengthen the spirit of goodwill, mutual respect and understanding among all the citizens in the country and contribute in no small measure to the strengthening of the bonds of national unity.
