The Notre Dame Religious Liberty Summit, organized by Notre Dame Law School’s Religious Liberty Initiative, is an annual gathering of the world’s leading defenders of religious freedom. The summit stimulates engaging conversations between scholars, advocates, and religious leaders about the future of religious liberty in the United States and around the world.

Notre Dame Prize for Religious Liberty

Each year during the summit, one individual is honored with the Notre Dame Prize for Religious Liberty in recognition of achievement in preserving religious liberty. Recipients of the award are listed below.

  • 2021 – Nury Turkel, U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom
  • 2022 – Mary Ann Glendon, Learned Hand Professor of Law, emerita, at Harvard and former U.S. ambassador to the Holy See
  • 2023 – Lord David Alton of Liverpool, member of the House of Lords of the United Kingdom

Religious Liberty Initiative Scholarship Award

The Religious Liberty Initiative Scholarship Award is presented annually at the Notre Dame Religious Liberty Summit to a legal scholar for accomplishments in the fields of law and religion.

  • 2021 – Asma Uddin, author of The Politics of Vulnerability: How to Heal Muslim-Christian Relations in a Post-Christian America
  • 2022 – Steven Smith, the Warren Distinguished Professor of Law and Co-Executive Director of the Institute for Law & Religion at the University of San Diego School of Law
  • 2023 – John E. Coons, the Robert L. Bridges Professor of Law (Emeritus) at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law
