Oireachtas Committee told harsh facts of life about commercial surrogacy

Officials from three Government Departments have expressed great doubt about the possibility of legislating for the recognition of international commercial surrogacy contracts in Ireland. Besides practical difficulties, it would create a double standard if commercial surrogacy, which is banned here in Ireland, is tolerated when it happens abroad. Read more here.

David Quinn debates future of religious schools

David Quinn was on the Pat Kenny Show yesterday debating the future of Church-run schools. He said one reason that more Catholic schools have not been divested is because in practice there is not much demand from parents to do so. You can listen to the item here.

'Anti-Christian persecution: what it is and why it is ignored'

Where: Our Lady of the Assumption Pastoral Centre, 67 Booterstown Avenue, Booterstown, Co Dublin.

When: Wednesday, May 4, 7.30pm (Admission free)

WE are very pleased to invite you to our next talk which will be co-hosted with Skellig, an informal discussion group that deals with matters of faith and society.

The talk will be delivered by Fr Michael Nazir-Ali who will speak on the topic, ‘Anti-Christian persecution: what it is and why it is ignored’. Fr Nazir-Ali is a long-time champion of persecuted Christians and also one of the most articulate defenders of orthodox Christianity in the English-speaking world today.

Fr Nazir-Ali will consider the reality of anti-Christian persecution in many countries which can range in form from State-led crack-downs to terrorist attacks to mob violence.

Christianity finds itself being persecuted in the name of nationalism, religion and ideology. Thousands of Christians are killed each year because of their faith but the West seems indifferent to their plight.

In the West itself, while there is no anti-Christian persecution as such, Christianity finds itself under pressure from laws constraining conscience rights and freedom of speech. These reflect increasing social hostility towards Christianity. On the other hand, minority religions are often protected from such criticism. Why is this?

Fr Nazir-Ali will consider this and other questions in his talk.

(Biographical note: Fr Nazir-Ali was born in Pakistan. He is a former Anglican prelate who served as Bishop of Rochester in England from 1994 to 2009. He sat in the House of Lords from 1999 until 2009 and is currently the director of the Oxford Centre for Training, Research, Advocacy and Dialogue. He is the author of numerous books including 'The Unique and Universal Christ', 'Triple Jeopardy for the West' and 'Faith, Freedom and the Future'. He was recently received into the Catholic Church).
