TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the Indian ambassador to Tehran over the insult to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in a TV program in India.

In the meeting with Indian envoy Dhamu Gaddam, Foreign Ministry’s Director General for South Asia officially protested to the desecration on behalf of Iran’s government and people.

The envoy expressed regret over the issue and described as unacceptable any affront to Islam’s Prophet.

Gaddam said this is not the Indian government’s stance and that the government respects all faiths.

He added that the person who insulted the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) holds no government post and only had a position in a party from which he was sacked.

The insulting remarks by two BJP spokespersons namely Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal have been vehemently condemned by Muslim countries.

Netizens in a number of Islamic countries in the Persian Gulf have called for boycotting Indian products following the incident.

Facing the backlash, the BJP took action on Sunday and suspended the two officials from the party's primary membership till further notice.

In a statement, the BJP claimed that it “strongly denounces insult of any religious personalities of any religion,” without directly pointing to the recent incident.

Qatar and Kuwait also summoned Indian envoys to voice their strong protest.
