Roundtable with Bishop Jude Arogundade
Committee Room 2
15 November 15:30 - 16:30

Lord Alton of Liverpool and Baroness Cox invite you to hear a first hand account from His Excellency, Bishop Jude Arogundade, Bishop of Ondo, Nigeria where, earlier this year appalling carnage culminated in the deaths of more than 40 churchgoers.

On 5 June 2022, during a Pentecost Sunday Service, a group of armed men entered St. Francis Xavier Church, in Owo, a city of more than 200,000 people. The assailants, some of whom pretended to be worshippers, detonated explosives and shot at people in the church. At least 40 people were killed, and dozens wounded.

In 2001, as a young priest, Father Jude was parish priest in upstate New York when the Twin Towers were attacked. He says the attack in his diocese was ‘my own 9:11.’ He publicly rebuked the President of Ireland for suggesting that the attack was linked to climate change as ‘incorrect and far-fetched’ and ‘completely inappropriate.’

Bishop Jude, who has led his diocese since 2010, has described the atrocity as part of a systematic and planned campaign of genocide by Fulani militias: in a blunt and sobering message he says: ‘What’s going on now is genocide. It's pure ethno-religious cleansing. That's what it is. And it’s getting worse.’
Red Wednesday Petition

ACN UK is launching a petition concerning Nigeria as part of their #RedWednesday campaign. The text can be found below:

We request that the UK Government call on their Nigerian counterparts to bring to justice those responsible for genocidal attacks such as the Pentecost Sunday 2022 massacre and countless other killings, abductions and other atrocities. The UK Government must demand the arrest and imprisonment of terrorists, the return of lands and villages, as well as compensation for the destruction of properties and livelihoods.
