Europe emerged from the Second World War utterly broken, with millions of refugees scattered across many countries. The United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) was created to resettle those displaced by the mayhem of the war and the Holocaust. The fragments from the past illuminate the work of UNRRA administrators, and chart how, in the aftermath of catastrophic loss, Holocaust survivors navigated their new lives in displaced persons camps. The exhibition is sourced with artifacts and documents from the archives of the United Nations and the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, and draws upon the expertise of the Center for the Study of the Holocaust, Genocide, and Crimes Against Humanity at the Graduate Center—CUNY. The exhibition was created by the Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme and Professor Debórah Dwork, together with the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research Archives, the United Nations Archives and Records Management Services, and with generous support of Stockton University.

Entrance to the United Nations Visitor Centre in New York is free, but there are requirements for all visitors.

All visitors 18 years and older (and unaccompanied children 12 years and older) are required to present a valid government-issued photo identification issued by a Member State or a Non-Member Observer State of the United Nations to enter UN Headquarters. The photo identification must be original (no photographs or photocopies accepted), in Latin/Roman characters, and may include:

All visitors to United Nations Headquarters require a UN security pass to enter the United Nations building. This security pass must be obtained at the Visitor Check-in Office (801 1st Avenue at 45th  Street), across the street from the United Nations Visitors Entrance. After receiving your security pass/wrist band, proceed across the street to the UN Visitors Entrance (46th Street and 1st Avenue) for security screening and access to UN Headquarters.

The exhibition is also accessible via a tour of UN Headquarters, which may be booked here. Please note: there is no charge to visit the exhibition, but there is a charge for a tour of UN Headquarters.
