At the Remah synagogue in Krakow, the Italian Minister for Education Merit Giuseppe Valditara signed a protocol of intent with UCEI (Union of Italian Jewish Communities) to cooperate and promote initiatives in Italian schools to combat antisemitism.
The ceremony was attended by Noemi di Segni, UCEI president, and Ariel Finzi, chief rabbi of the Jewish community of Turin.
“We have the responsibility to remember because the real risk is that in the end we get used to it,’ the minister stressed. ‘In some European countries, 20 percent of students do not even know what the Shoah was, while antismitism is resurgent in Europe: it means that we have not worked enough with our consciences. The Shoah was caused not only by the Germans but by all those who were collaborating, including some Italians. This year is the 75th anniversary of the Constitution, it is an occasion to remember that our Charter puts the human person above everything, at whose service the State is placed. This is our beacon,’ Valditara said, ‘that must light the way for us to prevent these tragedies from happening again’.
