Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Vice President Ma'ruf Amin appealed to the public to support the development of human resources (HR) based on science and technology in a bid to drive progress in world civilization.

"It is important to prepare HR, who master the keys to civilization, namely superior human resources, with science and technology ability," he noted at the International Conference titled "Religion, Peace, and Civilization" conducted by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in Jakarta on Monday.

With human resources, who have gained mastery over science and technology, the vice president said Indonesia will become a developed nation that does not only focus on national interests but also contributes greatly to peace and progress of the world civilization.

In building the civilization, it must be based on the function of humans, as Allah's representatives on earth, tasked with managing and developing the earth and its civilization, since humans are responsible for prosperity on earth, he stated.

In addition, the civilization that is built must be based on the spiritual and human dimensions. Hence, people must be able to position themselves as Allah's representatives in carrying out duties in life on earth, the vice president remarked.

Furthermore, he appealed to the public to maintain unity and integrity of the nation akin to the reference guidelines from Allah.

"Humans, as Allah's representatives, must mutually strengthen each other and not be hostile to each other. We must be respectful to each other since we, as humans, live on the same earth," he stated.

Concluding his remarks, Vice President Amin expressed hope that this International Conference, initiated by the MUI, would increase peace and strengthen the position of Muslims at the global level.

"I hope that this International Conference can produce agreements and recommendations that will further strengthen the position of Muslims at the global level, for the sake of realizing peace and upholding the values of humanity," he remarked.

Chairperson of the International Conference, Safira Machrusah, said that the MUI is fully committed with the government to become a forum for catering to the aspirations of Muslims, especially in supporting the development of a more advanced civilization.

"MUI can continue to be present as a place to accommodate Muslims in Indonesia, guiding the Muslims, become a beacon of virtue and world peace, and participate in building civilization," Machrusah stated.

The conference was attended by 300 participants and was held as a form of MUI's contribution to mainstreaming religion and contributing to peace and civilization.
