18% of students at a New Zealand university describe themselves as more religious than their parents, according to a study conducted by Paul Morris, a religious studies professor at Victoria University.
“There is a sizeable number of students who are not religious and a significant minority who are more religious,” said Morris. “Those two things are happening simultaneously.”
Chris Lysaght, director of Christchurch's Catholic Youth Team, has found an increasing tolerance among youth for the practice of Christianity.
“If they want to dress in black and put makeup on, then that's OK,” he said as he summarized teens’ attitudes. “If those people want to go to Mass on Sunday and worship the Lord then that's OK, too.”
