Freedom From Religion Foundation challenges Glencoe nativity scene

The Freedom From Religion Foundation is challenging another Alabama city over its nativity scene - this time, it's Glencoe.

Glencoe City Attorney Jim Turnbach confirmed the city received a letter Monday taking issue with the city's life-sized nativity scene, which was erected outside City Hall during the Christmas season.

It is the fourth known challenge involving an east Alabama city in the past year.

Turnbach said he is consulting with city officials regarding any action in response to the letter.

Last month, the Wisconsin-based group, which challenges religious displays such as nativity scenes on government property at Christmas time, sent a letter to Rainbow City arguing its nativity scene presented "an inherently Christian message on government property."

The city, after taking it down, replaced it a day later. Later that week, more than 500 people turned out for a demonstration to support the city in displaying the nativity scene. The city later responded in a letter that the light display is allowed under case law. That letter was authored by Turnbach, who is also city attorney for Rainbow City.

The Foundation last year challenged the City of Piedmont's Christmas Parade theme, which was originally "Keep Christ in Christmas" until the city removed the theme at the Foundation's urging. That didn't stop residents from showing up at the parade with T-shirts and signs with the original theme.

That came a month after a similar dispute was reported involving the group over prayers offered at Piedmont home football games.
