In December 1992, the demolition of Babri Mosque in India by Hindu fanatics resulted in sectarian violence that claimed more than two thousand lives in major Indian cities such as Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad. The location of the mosque on a site the Hindu said their god (Rama) lies buried for more than 400 years was provocative.
Despite appeals by government to the Hindus to let the court case on the issue be decidedly determined, the extremists ignored the advice and destroyed the mosque. More than two thousand people paid with their lives for such religious intolerance. Such is the consequence of letting the flames of hatred to overwhelm reason.
