The Religious Question in Modern China highlights parallels and contrasts between historical events, political regimes, and cultural movements in China in order to explore how religion has challenged and responded to secular Chinese modernity from 1898 to the present.

A panel of eminent scholars of religion served as discussants: Jose Casanova, professor of sociology at Georgetown University and senior fellow at the Berkley Center; Richard Madsen, distinguished professor of sociology at the University of California San Diego and director of the UC-Fudan Center; and Philip Gorski, professor of sociology at Yale University and co-director of the Center for Comparative Research.
